Media Release from Pedorthic Association Australia
    National Diabetes Week 2015
TO: News Editors, Health Reporters, Technical Reporters, and Pic Editors
    WHEN: 12-18th July 2015
    WHAT:
Appropriate footwear and footwear education are the pathways to reduce foot ulceration for people with high risk conditions related to diabetes.
Pedorthists are trained in fitting footwear specifically suitable to people with a neuropathic foot condition.
    WHY:
The Pedorthic Association of Australia supports the work of the Diabetes Association and all the health and patient networks in reducing the incidence and the complications of living with diabetes.

President of the Pedorthic Association of Australia Ernie Tye says “Pedorthists with very specific training in fitting safe footwear are often underutilised by other health practitioners when it comes to providing patients with the best footwear for people at risk of footwear pressure sores.”
He added, “We often see the patient after the foot ulcer has occurred and been ongoing for months..

The General Manager of PAA Casper Ozinger provided the science. “International studies and common sense tell us that improving the footwear choices people make reduce enormously the critical incident such as a footwear pressure sore.”
It seems in some cases it is a simple modification of the person’s shoe and some shoe choice education is all that is needed to provide a safe environment for walking and a full active life.
The little known health practitioner, the Pedorthist, work alongside Podiatrsist, Orthotist and other practitioners and the Government need to recognise the public health benefits of preventing the critical incident of a shoe pressure sore.
Neuropathy is a disease or dysfunction of one or more peripheral nerves, typically causing numbness or weakness.
