    Press release from the PAA;
    DIABETES NATIONAL AWARENESS WEEK 13-19TH JULY, 2014

    Diabetes Australia has announced that National Diabetes Awareness Week will be held between 13th and 19th July, 2014. Please refer to the Diabetes Australia Website www.diabetesaustralia.com.au for complete details.

    Persons with diagnosed Diabetes can develop a variety of lower limb issues including swelling, loss of sensation and ulceration. Footwear and mobility for these people can be problematical at best. This is where a Pedorthist can help.

    A pedorthist is an allied health care professional who is an expert in the improvement of human movement, in particular, gait (the way we walk) and better foot function, through the provision of footwear, footwear modifications and foot orthoses.

    "Pedorthists worldwide know only too well the struggle that people with Diabetes have in the most simple tasks of getting comfortable shoes", says Ernest Tye President of the Pedorthic Association of Australia (PAA). "We wish Diabetes Australia great success with their week of celebration and education".

    The General Manager of PAA Casper Ozinga agrees. "Diabetes practitioners operate in every state of Australia and often refer patients to pedorthists for answers to everyday struggle to get regular comfortable footwear. The PAA supports the work of Diabetes Australia

    Pedorthists conduct a comprehensive assessment of a person’s feet including sensation, gait, and other factors that may influence their patterns of movement and mobility – such as where they place their weight when they walk, the shape and development of the foot bones, and muscle and tendon function.

    Based on the results, they may then recommend special footwear or in severe cases, manufacture corrective and supportive footwear. They may also recommend foot orthoses, ankle foot orthoses, or other supportive devices to address the underlying conditions affecting a person’s feet and their mobility. The assessment may also lead to advice on an exercise program, or other foot care or health initiatives. We encourage team work for optimal out comes.

    Please visit the Associations website www.pedorthics.org.au to locate your nearest Pedorthist.
