  2. An orthopedic surgeon I previously worked with used to tell me that the important thing was not for a doctor to feel sympathetic for a patient, but that it was important that the patient perceive that the doctor is sympathetic. ;)

    well said. I learned once (the hard way) that I could not honestly said to a person "I know what you are going through" because I really didn't. But I do know how important for you to say "It is clearly a painful and frustrating thing you are experiencing. I believe you. And I will do my best to help you where I can.
